Nervonic acid function Brief

Nervonic acid plays a part in the biosynthesis of myelin and is found in sphingolipids of white matter in the human brain. Myelination begins in humans at approximately 32 weeks post-conception and is largely completed in infancy. Nervonic acid is known to be present in colostrum and human breast milk but has not, thus far, been identified in formula milk. Recent studeies have indicated that formula fed infants have lower concentrations of both nervonid and docosahexanoic acids in their cerebral white matter. Nervonic acid levels have been shown to increase logarithmically in the white matter of breast-fed term infants at the end of the second month. However, in term and preterm formula fed infants this increase is delayed until the end of the third month, at the earliest. Some researchers have suggested that impaired provision of nervonic acid early in life could delay the growth of brain or have serious consequences for neural performance. Indeed, there is a marked reduction in the level of nervonic acid in sphingolipids in diseases involving demyelinateion, such as adrenoleukodystropy(ALD) and multiple sclerosis(MS).
